The Ranges – Phase 1
Working with the environment to recreate spirit of place on historic airfield site
The Ranges marks a new phase in the development of the former RAF Bicester, located on the historic rifle ranges. This group of high-spec HQ buildings will become a hub for e-motor innovation and development, aligned with Bicester Motion’s ambitions of ‘advancing mobility’. Environmental considerations formed the framework of the landscape design with swales and attenuation basins catching surface water run-off. Permeable paving, roadways and car parks contribute to the sustainable drainage credentials of the site. On-site re-use of the soils was a major consideration for sustainability, informing choice of tree species, wildflower mixes and grasses. The planting aims to bring the ‘spirit of the airfield’ within the development. This natural approach creates interesting and intimate usable spaces with an appropriate, simplified palette.
