The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)
The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is a global initiative that provides a framework for organisations to report and act on evolving nature-related risks and opportunities. As an environmental consultancy, aligning with TNFD helps us lead by example and support our clients in embedding nature into decision-making.
In August 2025, we formally became a TNFD Adopter, reinforcing our commitment to integrating nature-related risks and opportunities into our own operations and advising clients on doing the same.
Nicholsons has always placed nature at the centre of our advisory and project work. Becoming a TNFD Adopter has demonstrated our commitment to:
- Leading by example in the environmental consultancy sector
- Ensuring transparency in how we address nature-related risks and dependencies
- Align with emerging global best practices in sustainability reporting

“Becoming a TNFD Adopter was a natural step for Nicholsons. It reflects not only the values we hold as a business but also the direction of travel for many other forward-thinking consultancies. We look forward to working with our clients and partners to continue putting nature alongside climate at the heart of financial and strategic decision-making.”
– Liz and Niel Nicholson

Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ)
Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) – Nicholsons report any incidents, risks, innovative ideas and observations via an in house curated “SHEQ” form available to the whole company. The information generated from the SHEQ form is monitored by the Quality manager. The Quality manager is responsible for a) re-laying this information to other staff who the SHEQ feedback may affect, b) providing training if necessary and c) working in a timely manner to find a solution. The Environment element of the SHEQ feedback forms part of the agenda of the quarterly Climate and Nature Innovation Committee meetings.

Human Rights and Community
Women in The Wild and Trees in the Wild – Nicholsons established two not-for-profit charities named Women in the Wild and Trees in the Wild which are focused within the Enonkishu Conservancy in Kenya. These charities support local communities to provide education and employment to local women. To read our latest report from Kenya, click here. The Trees in The Wild project contributes towards reforestation and aids the growing of 15,000 seedlings per year.
Forest Schools – Collaborating with the Berkeley Reafforestation Trust to fund and build Forest School projects. In addition to building the Forest School environments, we also support the schools by maintaining the environment after it has been built. This ensures longevity of the project and enables further development. For further information and to put forward your school for one of these projects, please read our brochure here.

Carbon
Kakamega Rainforest – We are piloting a restoration project in the tropical Kenyan rainforest, Kakamega, where guava production has compromised the indigenous species. Our programme aims to reinstate the naturally regenerating rainforest by removing the guava and fencing out foraging animals.

elemental – the green design tool
Nicholsons created elemental – the green design tool developed alongside the Royal Horticultural Society, the British Association of Landscape Industries, the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers and the Landscape Institute. The aim of this tool is to embed nature‑positive thinking into every project from the start. elemental helps our teams assess site conditions, model design scenarios and quantify biodiversity, carbon and water benefits, ensuring that ecological insight directly shapes decision‑making. It supports our TNFD approach by providing clear, data‑led evidence of how nature-related risks, impacts and opportunities are integrated throughout our design and delivery process.
