A key part of this commitment is collaborating with others, supporting the industry at a broader scale so that we can collectively have positive impacts on climate and nature. elemental, the green design tool, was created by Nicholsons and developed by the RHS, SGLD, LI, BALI and supported by the HTA and APL. elemental helps Nicholsons and fellow industry professionals to create landscapes that are deeply rooted in environmental sensitivity – supporting carbon reduction, boosting biodiversity and guiding teams and clients to make nature positive design decisions from the very beginning of a project.

We are also proud TNFD (Taskforce on Nature related Financial Disclosures) adopters, demonstrating our commitment to identifying, assessing and acting on our nature related impacts, risks and opportunities. This framework strengthens the way we measure and transparently report on our environmental performance.

Our passion for positive impact extends beyond the UK. Through Women in the Wild, we have been involved in supporting communities in Kenya’s Maasai Mara region – work that continues to evolve and grow in significance.

At the heart of this effort is our commitment to restoring native ecosystems. We have established a tree nursery producing 15,000 seedlings each year, contributing directly to reforestation and strengthening local biodiversity. Through our Trees in the Wild and Women in the Wild programmes in and around the Enonkishu Conservancy, we work closely with women’s groups and community leaders to champion landscape restoration and empower local livelihoods.

We are also piloting a project to restore the tropical Kenyan rainforest, where invasive guava has displaced indigenous species. Our approach combines targeted guava removal with protective fencing to keep out foraging animals, enabling natural regeneration to take place. Alongside this ecological work, our forest school leader, Elizabeth, runs a thriving Forest School at Shabwali School, inspiring both junior and senior pupils to connect with and care for their natural environment.

Nicholsons is a founding supporter of the Forest Canopy Foundation (FCF) – a pioneering not‑for‑profit organisation created to accelerate the creation of high-quality, nature-rich woodlands across the UK.

By contributing funding, expertise and on-the-ground experience, we help the Foundation connect landowners with trusted woodland creation partners, ensuring that new forests deliver genuine environmental benefits, long-term resilience and a positive climate impact.
