Woodland Inspired Planting
If you are lucky enough to have a woodland area on your property then nature has been generous and presented you with a lovely area for a more relaxed and informal planting style than you may have used in the areas more immediately surrounding the house. The area could be a haven of tranquillity. Consider the natural area, where it sits in the landscape and what you want from it. Do you want native woodland that offers a habitat for wild life and native forest plants or do you want a more cultivated forest style garden that offers a home to more interesting shade loving plant species. The former is less work; the latter requires more care and maintenance as it is a garden in the woods rather than a woodland garden.
It is always better to select species that will thrive in the natural conditions you have as these will not just survive but positively thrive. Anything called sylvatica; meaning forest loving, grows in the woods, is going to be a good choice.
