Our garden design and landscaping team are dedicated to creating inspirational garden designs that are both effective and within budget. Our skills cover a broad range of projects varying in size and scale from bijou courtyard gardens to the landscaping of large estates. We are passionate about using space well and celebrate the strength in every landscape.
Complementing the core garden design team are teams of highly trained hard and soft landscapers, arborists, garden maintenance and plant purchasing teams enabling us to offer a comprehensive end-to-end garden service.
Managing Director (MBALI)
Favourite Garden – Rousham
Why – The juxtaposition of the serene drama of the wider landscape and the soft exuberance of the walled garden.
Head of Garden Design
Freddie’s journey to the Nicholson’s Design team started whilst on a placement year, as part of his degree in product design at Bournemouth University. Graduating with BA honours, Freddie returned to us as an enthusiastic, hardworking and creative minded designer to pick up where he left off. He worked for a while in partnership with Liz allowing her to focus more of her efforts on being managing director. Under her direct mentoring Freddie drew upon her 20 years of experience designing gardens. For the last few years he has progressed into a lead designer, working on projects ranging from Oxford townhouses, country estates, Manor houses and restorations, developing a broad skill set in garden design.
Favourite Garden – Witley Court gardens and Parkland
Why – The beautiful derelict house, reminiscent of a forgotten Blenheim, is preserved by a glory of formal gardens and ponds which help to justly restore the architecture to its magnificent past. I have fond memories of the gardens and woodlands from regular trips with my grandparents as a young child. Whilst the gardens are not actually to my taste, the many memories I have from enjoying the space with my family are very prominent. I use this as inspiration to create the same memories for my clients in their gardens.
Garden Designer and Studio Manager
Favourite garden: Gravetye manor has all my favourite elements in a country garden: exuberant naturalistic planting of perennials and annuals, a warren of mature shrubs and ornamental trees to lose yourself in, a warm wall with exotic-looking large foliage shrubs, and a meadow that bursts with bulbs in spring and wild flowers in summer. A gardener’s garden.
Olly has spent much of the last 20 years working in horticulture in jobs ranging from garden maintenance in the suburbs of New York, USA to building and planting gardens all around Oxfordshire, as well as running a small plant nursery in the west of the county.
This huge range of experience came in very handy as he came to Nicholsons to head up the Softworks Team on a vast array of projects over 4.5 years.
A move to design, full-time, was always the planned next step and Olly has been part of the Nicholsons Design Studio now for 1.5 years and is leading our design approach to increasing biodiversity in all the gardens we design and build here. He has a huge knowledge of plants and love for all outdoor spaces from the manicured to the wild.
Favourite Garden: Hidcote Manor Gardens
A perfect example of how a singular vision combined with hard work and passion can create a stunning landscape from bare fields over the course of a few decades.
Assistant Designer & Lighting Specialist
After managing our retail shop for nearly 5 years, Nadia has moved over to design having loved the creativity aspect. She works alongside Freddie to assist with drawing the designs on CAD, and meeting clients to discuss their visions. Nadia is also our outdoor lighting specialist. Having worked with our supplier closely over the years, she has a great eye for placing lighting discreetly into garden designs.
Favourite garden : Powis Castle and Gardens. My grandparents live near Welshpool. Every time we visited them, we would take a trip to the castle to have a beautiful walk around the gardens, exploring all the different terraces and shaped topiary. (Sometimes we would have a slice of cake and tea after).
Planting Design Specialist
Ruby’s background is rooted in the garden – at a young age she by chance discovered a passion for plants and nature which led to her choosing to work at the local Garden Centre and Nursery. Besides the practical day-to-day work of potting up, pruning and advising customers, she took several courses in Plant Care and Horticulture, with a natural flair for plant design. Joining Nicholsons as a CAD Technician in 2013, Ruby now bridges the practical and the theoretical, detailing up the designs and putting together planting schemes with utmost accuracy and professionalism.
Favourite Garden? Broughton Grange
Why? Because of the stunning naturalistic herbaceous borders that look effortlessly simple yet contain combinations that deliver throughout the seasons
