This week we are looking at Ornamental Grasses, which can be used to great effect in many different situations from prairie-style planting schemes to stand alone specimens in gravel gardens or containers. With a wide range of sizes and colours available, you will be sure to find the perfect spot for these versatile plants, many of which provide architectural interest throughout the winter.
Lorraine features five of the numerous varieties currently in stock on the Plant Centre:
Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’ – with metallic blue-grey leaves which turn gold in the autumn and tiny purple spikelets, which can be dried for winter decoration, this plant could be sited in a sunny mixed herbaceous border. Plant with Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’ (see below) for a complementary palette. Height & spread 1m x 75cm.
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’ – an elegant plant producing distinctive upright clumps of creamy-white edged foliage and reddish-brown flowers in October. Would make an ideal specimen for a container. Height & spread 1.5m x 60cm.
Molinia caerulea ‘Windspiel’ – producing purple flower panicles in summer and good autumn colour, this plant is suitable for mass planting in shady borders or wild gardens, requiring little maintenance. Height & spread 1.5m x 1m.
Ophiopogon ‘Nigrescens’ – dramatic purple/black evergreen foliage and densely clustered violet flower spikes in summer followed by small black fruit, this is a good choice for the front of the border offering year-round interest. Height & spread 20cm x 30cm.
Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’ – an evergreen which forms small mounds of tufted intense blue/green foliage and similarly coloured flower plumes, which turn golden in autumn. Use as an edging plant in containers to best admire its stunning colour. Height & spread 25cm x 30cm.
