Nicholsons are committed to protecting our environment an all species within in and takes great care to avoid importing stock that may present a hazard to British Wildlife and diversity.

Business Function

Hazards include pests and diseases on nursery stock imported for use in the British landscape. Known hazards include;

  • Acute Oak decline
  • Ash Dieback
  • Horse Chestnut canker
  • Horse Chestnut leaf miner
  • Massaria disease of plane trees
  • Oak processionary moth
  • Phytophthora ramorum (e.g. in larch)
  • Phytophthora citricola in Taxus
  • Red Band Needle blight
  • Sweet Chestnut blight
  • Asian Longhorn beetle
  • Xyella in olives, planes and oaks (Note 2018 there is going to be compulsory latent testing of five high risk genera including olive and lavender)

And more horticulturally;

  • Viburnum beetle
  • Box blight (we don’t grow or buy Box for sale unless to a customer order at their risk and then it is treated with fungicide prior to despatch)
  • Vine weevils
  • Phylloxera in Quercus ilex
  • Phyllobius in Hornbeam

OUR PROCESS:

We only buy from audited suppliers, under ZP system.
We do not buy from third parties.

We follow a Purchase Order system to give us traceability.
The PO no is recorded against each sale.
Each week we report to DEFRA on all goods that are listed http://edomero.defra.gov.uk

Goods come in and are visually QC’d by our trained staff.
Posters in the Mess room and goods in give visual training to all.
Any concerns are quarantined and reported to Jonathan.hazlewood@apha.gsi.gov.uk

We have not had any verified cases but in the event that we do, we would seek guidance on the method of destruction and hygiene from DEFRA to avoid risk of infection.
